Appendix A: Glossary of Terms

This glossary gives you quick definitions of common words and tools used throughout the VirtualX platform. It’s here to help you feel more confident as you use the system—even if you’re not a tech expert.

🔤 A–Z of Key Terms

🧑‍🏫 Admin Panel (Front-End)
The place where teachers manage learners, track progress, reset quizzes, or send messages—without needing to go to the backend system.

📘 Assignment
A task learners must complete and submit, such as an essay, a file upload, or typed paragraph. It can be marked manually by the teacher.

📊 Assessment
A quiz, assignment, or test that helps you check if the learner understands the topic. May be auto-marked or manually marked.

📚 CAPS (Curriculum and Assessment Policy Statement)
The official South African school curriculum. VirtualX helps teachers stay aligned with CAPS in lesson content and assessments.

📎 Certificate
A digital award given to a learner when they complete a course. It can be auto-issued or manually awarded by the teacher.

📈 Course Progress
The percentage that shows how much of the course a learner has completed. It updates as they open units or pass quizzes.

📂 Curriculum Builder
The tool you use to add and arrange your course content: sections, units, quizzes, and assignments.

🧩 Page Builder
A drag-and-drop tool used to design course pages and dashboards on VirtualX. Mostly used by admins, but some teachers may access it.

🎓 Enrolment
When a learner joins your course. They are then able to access lessons, take quizzes, and submit work.

📧 Front-End
Everything you see and do without logging into the backend admin system. Teachers work mostly on the front-end dashboard.

📄 Lesson / Unit
A single section of learning within a course. It may contain text, video, images, practice questions, or downloads.

📎 Member’s Area
Your personal dashboard, where you can view your courses, profile, notifications, and messages.

🧠 Mentor AI / Dragon Mentor AI
Your built-in teaching assistant. It helps generate lesson content, quizzes, and CAPS-aligned summaries based on your input.

📩 Notification Panel
A bell icon that shows real-time alerts, like submissions, messages, or progress updates.

🔒 Password Reset
The process of changing your login password if forgotten or if security is needed.

📅 PWA (Progressive Web App)
A web app that works like a mobile app on any device. You can install VirtualX on your phone home screen and use it offline.

🧪 Quiz
A short test with questions. It can be timed or untimed, auto-marked (MCQs) or manually marked (short answers).

🔁 Reset Progress
A tool that clears a learner’s course progress so they can start again from Unit 1.

👤 Student Dashboard
The learner’s home area on VirtualX, where they track their progress, access courses, and see announcements.

🎖️ Badge
A small reward or achievement icon given for completing certain tasks, like finishing a unit or scoring full marks on a quiz.

📥 Submission
When a learner uploads or completes an assignment or quiz and sends it to you for marking.

🛠️ Shortcode
A small code (like [student_badges]) that you can paste into pages or widgets to show features without using code.

📂 Widget
A tool or content block that displays course info, progress bars, badges, etc., on your course or profile page.

📉 Reports & Insights
Detailed data on learner performance, engagement, and completion—available from your dashboard (no backend needed).

🧠 Dragon AI Universe Tools
A family of advanced AI tools that power VirtualX features—like analytics, planning, and learning path suggestions.

⚙️ Super Admin
The highest-level administrator on VirtualX. Handles platform settings, templates, user roles, and backend functions.
